A script opening is a period of time when we actively look for news scripts from young writers in Manchester and Greater Manchester. This gives us a chance to discover new ideas, plays, and the writers behind them and provides you with the opportunity to work with actors, designers, and directors to help develop these ideas and, hopefully, stage them.
Our aim is to develop, artistically, young playwrights who have demonstrated the skill and passion to produce work for the stage. We want to see you aim big and challenge difficult ideas. We want you to believe that you can produce bold work and help you on the journey to make that dream a reality. We want to invest in your talent!
For our script openings, different to our development workshops, please only submit a finished script, which is clear and clearly conveys your vision for your work. Consider if this is the best representation of your work.
We particularly welcome work from young POC, who are underrepresented in the theatre world.
We want our process to be as fair and as non-biased as possible. Therefore, we implement a process of anonymous submissions. This means the reader of your submission will have no idea who you are and will read it as an anonymous submission.
Please do not have your contact details on the front of your scripts.
As the submission will be anonymous please write this information in the message box of the 'contact us' box on this page:
Your finished play should be attached using the attachment button on the 'contact us' box. Acceptable formats include: PDF, DOC or DOCX.
You must include this information in this document:
You are a playwright living in Manchester or Greater Manchester.
We accept submissions from young playwrights who are under the age of 25.
When our script openings periods are live a 'contact us' box will appear on this page only, you will have the option to attach your script along with your details.
Scripts for TV or Film, including short films, however, we are working to develop these, novels, poetry, literary adaptations, scripts for voice only or synopsis only.
Please reach us at info@flipthescripttheatre.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.
YES! We would love to work on developing some new musicals. You would need to submit lyrics to songs, if you have any at this stage, along with the script.
Your script will be processed by a member of our team and will then be sent a member of our team to read. We will send an email acknowledging the receipt of your script.
As we are only a small team we are unable to respond with feedback immediately and this is due to us providing the attention that each script deserves. Once the play has been read we aim to provide a set of notes as to where your work intrigued us, and we call this our first round.
Round 1 - Basic feedback on where your work intrigued us. At this point, we may say that we think your play needs some more development and we may send you back to act on feedback, but we will wish to remain in contact and we would want to read your next draft.
Round 2 - A 1:1 Zoom meeting with one of our Literary team to discuss your work in more detail. This gives us a sense of your vision for this play and where you want to take it. You will then be invited to a writers' development lab where you will spend the day with a group of actors and a director where we will workshop parts of your script practically. You will then be told whether or not we want to take your submission further at this point in time and the reasons why.
Round 3 - If we really see a space for your work, it will be sent directly to our Artistic Director/CEO who will read it and will consider where it can go. It may be the case that your are offered a position as a writer-in-residence to continue developing this play before it is programmed as part of a Flip The Script Season. Throughout this time you will be fully supported at all stages.
At this moment in time, unfortunately the answer is no. We will be looking to expand the programme in the near future, opening it up to the whole North West region.
